Childish Joy
This week let me invite you to share in my childish joy. This Sunday is Palm Sunday, one of my favorite Sundays of the year. Approximately, 2000 years ago, Jesus of Nazareth entered into Jerusalem. The crowds could not contain their joy. It was much like how crowds line the streets of Kigali with banana leaves and cheers when a VIP enters. Yet as Jesus entered Jerusalem he set aside the trappings of power. In our modern world he would leave his security detail, the Mercedes, and take a border border taxi. He'd stop to hold a child, greet a stranger, and share a good natured laugh. He came as a King of Peace and needed no trappings of VIP status. In fact, his kingship was so obvious that if the crowds had not cheered the stones would have.
Our faith presents us opportunities through out the year to remember and celebrate. This Sunday we'll remember that day when Jesus entered Jerusalem. We'll line our church with banana leaves and palms. We'll carry our leaves. We'll call to the God of heaven as the only one who can restore us to what was lost.
For me Palm Sunday is a grown up expression of childish joy. It's the only time in a year in which we can bring the toys of childhood to worship at church. From the created order of leaves and sticks we'll celebrate our Eternal King of Peace.
Will you join the journey?
Imana ikurinde,
Dave
